Helping Immigrants with Criminal Records

At Albright & Rhodes, LLC, we have many immigrant clients who pled guilty to a felony or misdemeanor in the past, never imagining that it would cause difficulties for immigration matters. Our attorneys are experienced in immigration law and deportation, and often must deal with past criminal convictions to help clients stay in the country and reach their immigration goals.

In one case, we helped a green card holder who pled guilty to manslaughter and as a result was facing deportation. Appellate attorney Laura Kelsey Rhodes argued that the man's previous lawyer was negligent in not telling him about the immigration consequences of the plea, thus violating his constitutional rights. Ms. Rhodes got the conviction replaced with a conviction for assault, enabling the man to stay in the country and apply for citizenship. Gaining Security Clearance

Many appeal and post-conviction cases do not involve immigration issues. Sometimes a past conviction can prevent a person from getting a security clearance and getting the job they want. Though erasing past convictions for a criminal record (also called "expungement") is not always possible, in many cases, our appeals lawyers can use their experience and knowledge to find a creative solution.
