At Albright & Rhodes, LLC, we often get immigrant clients who pled guilty to a felony or misdemeanor in the past, never imagining that it would cause difficulties for immigration matters. In one case, we helped a green card holder who pled guilty to attempted murder and as a result was facing deportation. Appellate attorney Laura Kelsey Rhodes argued that the man's previous lawyer was negligent in not telling him about the immigration consequences of the plea, thus violating his civil rights. Ms. Rhodes got the conviction replaced with a conviction for assault instead, enabling the man to stay in the country and apply for citizenship. Gaining Security Clearance

Many appeal and post-conviction remedy cases do not involve immigration issues. Sometimes a past conviction can prevent a person from getting security clearance and getting the job they need. Though sometimes, erasing past convictions for a criminal record (a.k.a. expungement) is not possible, in many cases, our appeals lawyers can use their experience and knowledge to find a creative solution.
